You Don’t Have a Real Job

I’m always amazed by the number of people who think because I work from home, I have a ton of free time on my hands. I would love to say that I spend most of my day sitting around and joyfully playing with my child as I spend a minimal amount of time working on projects. Ahhh what a lovely dream image.
Let’s face it, being a Mom is a full-time job by itself, whether you are a stay at home mom, work out of the home mom, or a work at home mom. Truth is, I don’t have much free time at all. Sure I do get to spend a lot of time with my daughter, but I also spend quite a bit of time working. As well as cleaning up my house, running errands, and well just running my household. My husband works full-time out of the house with a long commute every day, so the majority of things fall on me.
My week is pretty heavily scheduled in order to make sure that everything I need to do get done. I try to keep a Monday through Friday work week. Saturday and Sunday are mostly for family time but they are also used as “overflow” days in case there is something that didn’t get finished.
Nap time is prime time for getting things done during the day. Fortunately my daughter takes about a 2 hour nap every day. I have friends with older children that don’t nap though, so I know that won’t last forever. I also work after she goes to bed at night. I try to make sure I spend two evenings a week relaxing with a good book or watching TV in order to make sure I am having “me” time.
All of this makes for a pretty busy life. I am guessing yours is pretty similar. If you are a work at home mom, do the people in your life feel you are not really working? How do you handle comments from those who don’t think you have a real job? Let’s help each other figure out the perfect comeback.
Warmly,
Mia

Mia, Ditto for me. I feel like my friends family and husband all think I do nothing all day. It is no way easier to work from home than it is to go into a calm and quiet office away from kids(distractions) and the house with all of its duties. I find that if your not at homw with your kids there is a lot less to do when you get home versus when you are all in the house together all day the duties are endless not to mention the noise! I just recenetly started taking classes online as if I’m not busy enough already. I don’t know how I don’t blow my cork everyday let alone getting all my work, my assignments and kid stuff done. Add in the kids on summer vacation and its like a romper room. I have 4 kids a ten year old son 5 year old twin boys and my girl is 18 months old and she never stops or sleeps.
Its just like when someone without kids gives you advice on how to raise your kids or makes snide remarks behind your back about you misbehaving kids in public. They have no clue what they’re talking about. We know better and thats all that counts.
