When people learn that I work from home, they usually ask me how I got my start and if I can find them a work at home job too. The appeal of being able to stay home and make money is pretty high for most people. Unfortunately the number of legitimate jobs out there is low and the number of people searching for them is very high.

If you are looking for an actual job, it can take quite some time searching in order to find a company that hires telecommuters. There are some companies that hire inbound phone operators that take orders from customers. You login into their computer system and calls are routed through your home phone line. Customers believe that they are talking to someone in a call center. Most of these companies require absolute silence in your home while taking calls, so having a crying baby or barking dog in the background could result in losing the job. Some of these legitimate companies are West At Home, Working Solutions, and Alpine Access.

I have also personally worked for Educational Testing Services, grading papers written by California high school students. It was all online with occasional phone calls made to a supervisor. At the time they required a college degree for all scorers. I do not know if they are still hiring. They only did scoring a few times a year and it was more of a “fun” money maker rather than a steady income.

There is a large list of work at home classified ads over on WAHM.com. I have not checked the accuracy of these listings, so you should tread carefully. They are regularly updated though and are for a variety of positions.

Hands down though, the best jobs I have received were all given to me by friends. I have found the secret to working at home to be who you know. Ask all of your friends if they know of any opportunities. It has taken me about 4 years to consider myself a successful work at home mom.

How did you find your work at home job? How long have you been working from home. I would love to hear about your successes.

Warmly,
Mia
