Now that my daughter is getting to the point that she doesn’t put everything into her mouth, I have introduced her to the fun world of play dough. She loves to roll it with a rolling pin and cut it up with cookie cutters. She pokes it and pinches it and smooshes it with her little fingers. It can keep her entertained for a good twenty minutes or so.

The fun really begins in the kitchen though. I prefer to make my own play dough, so that I know what goes into it. In this day and age of toy recalls I find I am more comfortable with her playing with something I have made, especially when some of it may end up in her mouth.

As a regular Tuesday feature I am hoping to showcase fun recipes that you can make with your children in the kitchen. Today is all about play dough. I have included a few different recipes for you to experiment with.

Play Dough

1 cup flour
1 cup warm water
1 tsp. oil
2 tsp. cream of tartar
¼ cup salt
food coloring

In a medium size pan, mix all of the ingredients. Add the food coloring in last. Stir over medium heat until the mixture is well blended. Place the mixture on the counter on wax paper and allow to cool. When cool enough to touch knead until smooth. Store in an airtight container or sealable bag. Note: Instead of using food coloring, you may use unsweetened Kool-aid to color the play dough. It will add a nice fragrance to the dough but remember it is not edible!

Edible Play Dough

1 cup creamy peanut butter
¼ cup honey
1 cup dried milk

Mix all the ingredients in a bowl until smooth. This dough is edible and fun to play with too. It should not be given to children under one year of age due to the honey. It should also not be used by children with peanut allergies. I have not tried it but you may be able to substitute sunbutter.

What are some of your favorite play dough recipes? I hope these ideas help you get cooking with your children.

Warmly,
Mia
