As part of our Tuesday recipe series, I thought pretzels would be a fun topic today. I love pretzels. Most of the people that I know love pretzels. Strangely my dog won’t eat them, but I still love her. There is nothing quite like a homemade pretzel though. Getting to twist them into shapes, bake them and then eat them is so much fun.

My daughter is a bit too young for making pretzels. She does love to play with the dough and eat the uncooked stuff. Whenever my three-year-old nephew comes over he begs to make pretzels.

This is a super simple recipe and one that your children can help you make. You will need:

1 Tablespoon Yeast (I use the bread machine yeast that comes in a glass jar and I keep in the refrigerator for freshness)
½ cup warm water
1 teaspoon sugar or honey
1 1/3 cup flour (I use half white whole wheat and half all purpose flour)
½ teaspoon salt
Salt or cinnamon/sugar mixture to top the pretzels with

Preheat oven to 325 degrees and spray a cookie sheet with non-stick spray. Measure out the warm water and add the yeast and honey. I like to use a glass Pyrex measuring cup as you can watch for the yeast to proof. Mix with a fork and let sit for five minutes. It should appear bubbly or foamy. If not your yeast is bad. While the yeast is proofing, mix the flour and salt together. Once the yeast has proofed then add it to the flour mixture. Mix with a spoon and then turn out onto a floured counter to knead. Knead until the dough is smooth and only a little sticky. If too dry, add a bit of water. If too sticky, then add more flour. Let the dough rest for 10 minutes. Pull off small pieces of the dough and roll into long logs. Make traditional pretzel shapes, letters or geometric shapes. Have fun! Brush with water and top with salt or cinnamon/sugar. Bake for 10 minutes, allow to cool slightly and eat!

Have you ever made pretzels with your children? What are some of your favorite toppings? This is such a fun project and a great afternoon snack.

Warmly,
Mia
