The strawberry season has arrived here. Local farms have their fields open for the “you pick” crowds and their tables are loaded at the farmer’s market. They are absolutely one of my favorite fruits, even more so when I know they have just been picked.
In fact the supermarket is full of wonderful fruits and my daughter just cannot get enough of them. Today’s recipe is a fun one that your child will enjoy making for an afternoon snack or for a summer barbecue. And the ingredients are flexible to whatever is in season in your area.
Fruit Kebobs
Your favorite fresh fruit cut into cubes or rounds. Some suggestions are pineapple, strawberries, apples, blueberries, mango, bananas, etc.
Bamboo skewers
Place the cut fruit onto the bamboo skewers, alternating by color. Make sure you help your child as bamboo skewers can sometimes have a sharp point.
Fruit Dip
1 8 ounce package of softened cream cheese or neufchatel
3 tablespoons of sugar
1 cup sour cream (reduced fat is fine)
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Add all of the ingredients to a bowl and mix with a wooden spoon until well combined. For a fluffier texture use a mixer. You may need to help your child use a mixer. Place in a serving bowl.
Serve the fruit kebobs with the fruit dip.
Your children will love this new twist on the old kebob recipe. This one is especially great because it doesn’t involve any grilling. You can experiment with the fruit dip by adding fruit juice, lemon zest, or berries to give it a different flavor and color.
What are you favorite recipes involving fruit? Do you find that your kids love to eat fruit or is it something that they won’t touch? Hopefully the fruit dip will make it more appealing to them.
Warmly,
Mia
