Long summer days mean trying to come up with fun activities for outside. The weather has us outside most days enjoying the sun. Sometimes kids want something to do that doesn’t involve the pool or swing set though.
Continuing with our kid friendly recipes on Tuesday theme, today’s recipe is for chalk. Every child loves to play with chalk, whether on a blackboard or on the sidewalk. A long driveway can be a huge canvas just waiting for the right drawing. Hours of endless fun can be had right in your yard.
The fun begins in the kitchen of course. Using just a few simple ingredients your kids can make their own chalk to play with.
Chalk
1/3 cup plaster of Paris
4 Tablespoons water
food coloring
Mix all of the ingredients in a bowl until it is an even consistency. You can add the food coloring after the water and plaster of Paris are mixed together. The mixture can be poured into a number of different things to make fun shapes. If you want traditional chalk shape, use old toilet paper tubes and line them with plastic wrap. Candy molds, soap molds, and cookie cutters can also be used. Also to dry until hardened all the way through.
Drawing with their own chalk on the sidewalks can be a fun project every day. The rain will come and wash away yesterday’s creations leaving a blank canvas. Or you can hose them off in order to create new works of art.
Host an art contest or show for your kids too in order to get them to do their best work. Assign them a square to create in and see what they come up with.
Do your kids enjoy using chalk? Is it more of an indoor or outdoor activity at your house? I hope that your kids love this recipe.
Warmly,
Mia
