Working from home probably means that you will be spending quite a bit of time at home. Going from spending the majority of your waking hours out of the home, to rarely leaving can change the dynamic of the home. One of the nice things of working outside the home is that you can leave work at the end of the day. Working at home, you may always feel on because you can’t get away. An easy solution is to separate your work space from your living space in order to get away.

If your home is large you may have an extra room that can be designated as an office. Many homes built within the last few years have a dedicated office in the plans. Perhaps you have a spare bedroom, basement or finished attic that could be used as an office. A room that you can close the door on at the end of the day is the ideal spot.

If you don’t have a distinct space for an office, then you will need to be more creative. An armoire style desk can be a great workspace. It can hold everything you need, including computer, printer, files, office supplies, and books. Then when you are done working you can close the doors and it just looks like a nice piece of furniture. Many furniture and office supply stores carry this type of desk. Or maybe you can create something similar out of an existing piece of furniture.

Perhaps you have a desk but not a room that you can commit to an office. You could use a decorative screen to wall off your office space. A screen could be easily moved when you are working and then put back into place to hide your office. There are many styles of screens to choose from.

If space is tight, then you will need to downsize. A cabinet in your kitchen can also act as a home office, especially if you have a laptop computer. Your kitchen table can act as your desk while you are working. Measure out the space you have available and find items that will fit. A small printer, a box for essential office supplies, and perhaps another for your child, and you are in business. You could easily pull everything out that you need to work for the day. Set up will only take a few minutes. Then when you are done working, put everything away and close the door.

What is your office space like? What works best for you? I would love to hear about your home office.

Warmly,
Mia
