There are many reasons to work from home. No matter what your reason, the number one thing that all home based businesses need is an office. This can be an important step in creating a business that will succeed.
According to a recent newspaper article by David P. Willis there are number of important factors that every home office needs. The first is to find the space. It should be a space that you can set aside as your office and use it for nothing else. You may find that area in a spare bedroom or basement.
The next is to find the right equipment for your office:
Once you have the space, you’ll need proper equipment. You’ll need a telephone line, computers, a fax machine, copier and cabinets and shelves for storage. And you’ll need office furniture, such as a chair that is right for your back and posture.
Ideally, you should buy a chair with an adjustable height and arm rests, wheels and a tilt seat, said Ken Souchek, senior manager of orthopedics and rehabilitation at Ocean Medical Center in Brick, N.J. You should be able to place your feet flat on the floor, he said.
It is important to work with the space that you have in the best way possible. Analyze what your daily needs are and figure out the items that you will be using the most. Make those items easily accessible so that you can complete tasks quicker. Your space may be fairly limited if you are working out of a closet or armoire, so you may have to be creative.
Two of the people interviewed for the article stressed the importance of having a separate business phone line. This is important for maintaining a balance between work and family. Another key feature of a home office is a door. If you can shut the door and walk away you will better be able to keep regular business hours.
What are some of the key features in your home office? Does yours have a door and separate phone line?
Warmly,
