Sometimes as a WAHM, working at home is not always possible. Your child may be in school and driving back and forth may be too time consuming. Or they are at an activity that you don’t want to be too far from. Those may be occasions when you need a place to work from. Enter the realm of Wi-Fi hotspots. Generally found in coffee shops and fast food restaurants, this can be an inexpensive place to work. It is always a good idea to follow some guidelines when choosing to work in these places.

Rule number one is to buy something. Most of these places are offering wireless internet for free as a service to their customers. At the minimum purchase a coffee or tea in return for using their space as an office. Most do not mind if you spend an hour or two working. If you are going to be there longer, buy another drink or a snack.

Take up a minimum amount of space. Depending on your area, a Wi-Fi hotspot may be a very busy place. Do not take up a table for four, if you only need space for one. Another thing to keep in mind is power plugs. If you do not need to charge your battery on your laptop, don’t sit next to the only electrical outlet in the place.

If you start out working when the place is slow and then it fills up during peak time, it may be time to leave. You will have to judge this but keep an eye on the other customers to see if anyone is searching for a table. If you finished your coffee an hour ago and someone else needs your table, it is probably time to wrap up your work and go.

Do you ever work at a Wi-Fi hotspot? What are some rules that you follow? Working at these places is growing option for telecommuters. I really enjoy working out of the home on occasion.

Warmly,
Mia
