When I first starting working from home, one of the things that everyone told me I should do was design website. I didn’t have any knowledge or training in building websites, but it was the “hip” thing to do. I have since taken a few courses, read a few books and built a few websites. I definitely do not consider myself to be a web designer though.

Running a web design business from home can be a very good business venture though. If you own a business it is de rigueur to have a website.
Many people have a personal blog nowadays detailing every aspect of their lives, as well as focused websites that keep people posted about their wedding, pregnancy, and hobbies.

All those websites means there is a need for someone to build them. Most people do not have the expertise to build a website and are more than willing to hire someone to do it for them.

To start off you should take a training course on website building. A quick search on Google returns over 30 million pages related to “web design training course.” There is sure to be something out there that will fit your needs. Your local community college may offer a classroom course or even better, one that is online. Most of the time these courses are very low cost and a great way to see if it is something you would be interested in.

Your local library or bookstore probably has some great books on the subject too. You may want to check the publishing dates on the books at your library to make sure that the books are not outdated. The internet changes fast and you want to keep up with it.

My biggest suggestion is to find a niche and market to it. Perhaps you enjoy creating blogs or want to help people commemorate the birth of their child. You may find it easiest to get clients if you narrow your focus.

In order to get started put together several websites to create portfolio that you can show to potential clients. Start out by building websites for family and friends for free. This will give you lots of great experience.

Are you a web designer? Do you have any advice for potential web designers? This is definitely a career that will be around for awhile.

Warmly,
Mia
