Business Focus: Baby Proofing
I remember the early months of my daughter’s life. I was able to set her down on a blanket on the floor, wash a few dishes, and then go back five minutes later and she was still in the same spot. Then she became mobile and the whole world changed.
We had to make a mad dash to the baby store in order to pick up baby proofing items of every shape and size. Plug covers, foam pads for the fireplace mantel, cord holders for the mini blinds and more. It was all a bit overwhelming and it took weeks to discover all of the little hidden dangers in our home.
A great niche business idea is to offer baby proofing services in a client’s home. You would go in and assess the hazardous areas. Then you would recommend fixes and install them. The appeal to parents is that you would be an expert in the field and could find things that most new parents would overlook. Plus many people are very busy these days and this is one less thing that they would have to worry about.
You would need to come up with a cohesive checklist for walking through any home. You could either keep an inventory of necessary items or purchase them as needed. If you did not keep inventory, then you would have a two step process to baby proofing. The first visit would be an assessment and the second would be an installation visit.
A great marketing idea is to sell gift certificates for your service. This could be a very popular baby shower gift or one that grandparents would be happy to give.
This business may come with a degree of liability to it, so I advise that you consult an attorney to create a contract for clients to sign.
Do you own a baby proofing business? Did you child proof your own home? I know that I still find plugs that are uncovered from time to time.
Warmly,
Mia
